  • ¼ cup green onions (sliced) Chives can work as a substitute.
  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds Optional for serving.

Equipment

  • large cast-iron skillet

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a small bowl, whisk together 2 tablespoons of brown sugar, ¼ cup of reduced-sodium soy sauce, 1 tablespoon of sesame oil, 1 teaspoon of crushed red pepper flakes, and 1 teaspoon of ground ginger.
  2. Place a large cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat and add 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil. Allow the oil to heat until shimmering.
  3. Add 4 cloves of minced garlic to the hot skillet and cook for about 1 minute, stirring frequently, until the garlic becomes fragrant and golden.
  4. Incorporate 1 pound of ground beef into the skillet, breaking it apart with a spatula. Cook for about 3-5 minutes until browned and cooked through.
  5. Once the beef is cooked, drain any excess fat from the skillet. Stir in the prepared sauce and ¼ cup of sliced green onions, then allow the mixture to simmer for an additional 2 minutes.
  6. Remove the skillet from heat and spoon the savory beef mixture over a bowl of steamed rice. Sprinkle sesame seeds and garnish with extra green onions before serving.
