Ingredients

For the Meat Sauce
  • 1 lb Ground Beef (80/20) Provides a savory, juicy base; swapping for ground turkey or plant-based meat offers a lighter option.
  • 1 Small Onion, diced Adds sweetness and depth; shallots can be used for a milder flavor.
  • 3 Garlic Cloves, minced Enhances aroma and flavor; consider using roasted garlic for a sweeter taste.
  • 1 cup Crispy Cooked Bacon, crumbled Contributes crispy texture and smoky flavor; turkey bacon serves as a lighter substitute.
  • 1 jar (24 oz) Marinara Sauce Forms the base sauce with acidity and flavor; homemade sauce provides a freshness boost.
  • 1 tsp Italian Seasoning Blends dried herbs to elevate flavor complexity; fresh herbs are a lovely alternative.
  • 0.5 tsp Smoked Paprika Introduces a subtle smokiness; use regular paprika if it’s what you have.
  • Salt & Pepper Essential staples for seasoning to taste.
For the Béchamel Sauce
  • 3 tbsp Unsalted Butter Used to make the béchamel; margarine or oil can be swapped if needed.
  • 3 tbsp All-Purpose Flour Thickens the sauce; gluten-free flour works for a gluten-free version.
  • 2 cups Whole Milk Creates the creamy béchamel; non-dairy milk can be a great lactose-free alternative.
  • 1 cup Grated Parmesan Cheese Adds richness and savory flavor; feel free to substitute with Pecorino Romano.
  • 2 tsp Garlic Powder Enhances flavor; fresh minced garlic can be a tasty stand-in.
For Layering the Lasagna
  • 12 Lasagna Noodles, cooked al dente Provides structure; zucchini noodles are fantastic for a low-carb option.
  • 2 cups Shredded Mozzarella Melts beautifully, contributing creaminess; provolone is another delicious swap.
  • 1 cup Shredded Cheddar Adds comfort and sharp flavor; opt for a milder cheese if you prefer.
  • 0.5 cup Grated Parmesan, for topping Forms a crisp, cheesy crust; feel free to omit for a lighter dish.
  • 2 tbsp Chopped Fresh Parsley, optional Adds a fresh touch and color for presentation; omit if it’s not on hand.

Equipment

  • Large skillet
  • Medium saucepan
  • Baking dish

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef and brown for about 5-7 minutes until no longer pink. Stir in diced onion and cook until softened (4-5 minutes). Add minced garlic and cook for another minute. Mix in marinara sauce, crumbled bacon, Italian seasoning, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Let simmer for 10 minutes to meld flavors.
  2. In a medium saucepan, melt unsalted butter over medium heat. Whisk in all-purpose flour and cook for about 1-2 minutes until golden and bubbly. Gradually pour in whole milk, whisking continuously until thickened, approximately 5 minutes. Stir in grated Parmesan cheese and garlic powder, seasoning with salt and pepper before removing from heat.
  3. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). In a baking dish, spread a layer of meat sauce on the bottom. Place 4 cooked lasagna noodles on top, followed by béchamel sauce, shredded mozzarella, and shredded cheddar. Repeat layers, finishing with a final layer of cheese and a sprinkle of grated Parmesan on top.
  4. Cover with aluminum foil and bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake uncovered for an additional 15 minutes, until the top is golden and bubbly. Let rest for 10 minutes before slicing into portions.
