Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 9x9-inch baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 1/2 teaspoon of ground nutmeg. Whisk together and set aside.
  3. Cream together 1/2 cup of softened unsalted butter and 1 cup of granulated sugar using an electric mixer until light and fluffy for about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Mix in 1 large egg, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, and 1/2 cup of buttermilk into the creamed mixture until smooth.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture and stir gently until just combined.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan, smoothing the top with a spatula.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick in the center comes out clean.
  8. Allow the bars to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. Whisk together 1 cup of powdered sugar, 1/4 cup of maple syrup, 1/4 teaspoon of maple extract, and 1-2 tablespoons of milk until smooth.
  10. Once cooled, drizzle or spread the glaze over the bars and let it set for about 10-15 minutes before cutting into squares.
