Step-by-Step Instructions for Apple Butter Grilled Cheese
- Heat 1 teaspoon of butter in a skillet over medium heat. Sauté finely chopped shallots and fresh thyme for about 3-4 minutes until translucent and fragrant. Set aside.
- Spread a generous layer of apple butter on one side of each slice of bread. On one slice, layer sautéed shallots, thinly sliced apples, and shredded alpine-style cheeses. Cap with the second slice, apple butter side down.
- In a small bowl, whisk together one egg and a splash of milk until combined. Brush egg wash over the assembled sandwich.
- Reheat skillet over medium heat, add another teaspoon of butter and melt completely before adding the sandwich.
- Place the sandwich in the skillet, egg side down. Brush the top side with remaining egg wash and cook for about 5 minutes until golden-brown.
- Flip the sandwich over and add another teaspoon of butter. Cover the skillet and cook for an additional 3-5 minutes until heated through and cheese is melted.
- Remove from skillet, let rest for a minute, cut in half, and serve warm.

Notes
For the best texture, use thick-sliced bread and ensure even layering of ingredients. Adjust the cooking time based on your skillet's heat settings.
