  • 3 medium onions feel free to increase quantity for more flavor
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 tablespoons butter or olive oil as a healthier alternative

  • 1 teaspoon salt to taste
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper freshly ground for best flavor
  • 1 cup heavy cream can't be substituted without changing texture
  • 1 cup beef broth or substitute with vegetable broth for vegetarian version
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce or soy sauce as a substitute
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme or fresh thyme as an alternative
For the Cheesy Topping
  • 1 cup Gruyere cheese grated, or substitute with Swiss or cheddar
  • 0.5 cup Parmesan cheese grated, can be omitted if unavailable
For Garnish
  • 0.25 cup fresh parsley chopped, for a pop of color

Method
 

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Gather ingredients and prepare your baking dish.
  2. Melt 2 tablespoons of butter and 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and sauté for 15–20 minutes until caramelized.
  3. Add minced garlic for the last 2 minutes of sautéing. Stir until fragrant.
  4. In a mixing bowl, combine heavy cream, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, dried thyme, salt, and black pepper. Whisk until smooth.
  5. Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish. Layer the sliced potatoes and onions tightly, finishing with a top layer of potatoes.
  6. Pour the cream mixture evenly over the layered potatoes and onions.
  7. Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  8. Remove the foil and sprinkle Gruyere and Parmesan cheese on top. Bake uncovered for an additional 15–20 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Let the bake rest for a few minutes, then garnish with parsley before serving.
