Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Melt the unsalted butter in a medium bowl, then add the chopped pears, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, and salt. Toss well.
- Transfer the pear filling into a greased baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
- In a separate bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, brown sugar, baking powder, spices, and salt. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Pour in the milk and stir gently until just combined.
- Spread the topping evenly over the pear filling, allowing some fruit to peek through. Sprinkle sanding sugar on top, if desired.
- Bake for about 35 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
- Let it cool for about 10 minutes on a wire rack before serving warm.
