Step-by-Step Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch round cake pan. Peel, core, and slice the apples into wedges.
- Melt 1/2 cup of unsalted butter in a medium saucepan, then stir in 1 cup of brown sugar and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon. Bubble gently for 3-5 minutes until golden.
- Pour the caramel into the greased cake pan, spreading it evenly. Layer apple wedges over the caramel in a circular pattern.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together 1 1/2 cups of flour, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. In another bowl, cream 1 cup of sugar and 2 eggs until fluffy. Gradually add 1 teaspoon of vanilla and 1/2 cup of milk.
- Pour the cake batter over the layered apples. Bake for approximately 40 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then gently invert onto a serving plate to reveal the caramelized apples.

Notes
For best results, use fresh, firm apples and allow caramel to bubble before pouring into the pan.
